The St. John Paul II Catholic High School Band promotes the performing arts among the students as an enhancement to their other studies. Participation in band fosters discipline, teamwork and an appreciation for fine music. Three concerts are presented annually including a Sacred Arts concert, Christmas concert and Spring concert.
Students may play for Solo and Ensemble contests and audition for All-District and All-State bands. The band also serves to facilitate the mission and activities of St. John Paul II Catholic High School through partner school concerts, Step-Up Day activities, Open House and support for our new football team.
At present, there are two bands at St. John Paul II Catholic High School: Concert Band and Pep Band.
The Concert Band is the main performing group for the instrumental department at St. John Paul II Catholic High School. Three concerts are presented annually, and the Concert Band participates in the District Assessment. Band members have an opportunity to play in smaller ensembles and play for the Drama Department's Spring Musical.
The St. John Paul II Catholic High School Pep Band was formed in the fall of 2010 to rally fans at JPII sporting events including football and basketball.
The St. John Paul II Catholic High School Band program is under the direction of Bruce Zeiger. Zeiger is a native of Hershey, Pennsylvania. He spent 20 years in the U. S. Air Force band career field and has played for presidents, kings, queens, ambassadors, etc. in over 38 countries. He has a B. A. in Human Resources Management from St. Leo College, graduating with a 3.99 GPA. He also has a Master of Music in Church Music from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, New Orleans, LA, graduating with a 3.98 GPA. For 14 years, he worked as a church orchestra director and minister of music in three different Baptist churches. He is an active musician in the area, playing with Brass Band of Huntsville, Twickenham Winds, Flint River Brass, UAHuntsville Wind Ensemble and Collegium Orchestra, Huntsville Chamber Winds, First Baptist Church orchestra and various musical theater orchestras.
