On Saturday November 12, 2011 the Pope John Paul II Catholic High School Girls & Boys cross country teams both won the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) state meet 2nd place team trophies for class 4A. The state meet was held at Oakville Indian Mounds in Moulton, Alabama. Top 15 All- State medals were won by JPII athletes Lydia Sweeney, Evan Pardi, captain Andrew Weaver & Stephen Leahy. The top JPII finishers were Lydia Sweeney with a 5k (3.1 mile) time of 21 minutes 57 seconds & Evan Pardi with a 5k time of 17 minutes 16 seconds. The JPII meet ‘Most Improved Athletes’ were Sarah Lopez & Stephen Leahy. Season Co- Comeback Athletes of the Year were Evan Pardi, who made a remarkable comeback from hip surgery after the 2010 cross country season & team captain Andrew Weaver, who made an equally remarkable comeback from knee surgery in September, 2011. The Pope John Paul II Catholic High School Varsity Girls & Varsity Boys both won the Section Meet team cross country championships on Thursday, November 03, 2011 at Scottsboro High School, Scottsboro, Alabama. The top JPII finishers were Emily Woods, who ran a career best 5k of 21 minutes 51 seconds to place 2nd overall, and Evan Pardi, who won the individual section meet championship with a season best 5k time of 17 minutes 01 seconds. The PJPII meet ‘Most Improved Athletes’ were Emily Woods and captain Andrew Weaver, who ran a career best 5k time of 18 minutes 14 seconds to place 4th overall. Andrew continues to show mental toughness and physical true grit in his remarkable comeback from knee surgery in September, 2011. A JPII record 11 athletes won All- Section Top 10 medals at the meet. They were Emily Woods, Katie Sisk, Maria Longo, Betty Lopez, Lindsey McCormick, captain Michelle Thompson, Evan Pardi, captain Andrew Weaver, Stephen Leahy, Bradley Robison & Noah Bradley. The JPII Varsity Girls remain undefeated in class 4A and are ranked 2nd in the state, while the JPII Varsity Boys have a 51 win- 03 loss record in class 4A and are ranked 2nd in the state. Three JPII Varsity Girls go into the state meet tied for the PJPII season scoring lead with 45 points each. They are Maria Longo, Katie Sisk & Emily Woods. Evan Pardi has a chance to win the individual state championship. A number of our athletes have a chance to make the top 15 All- State team. Come on out on Saturday, November 12, 2011 to cheer on the JPII cross country teams to a possible state team championship or two.
On Saturday October 15, 2011 the Pope John Paul II cross country teams competed at the Saint Bernard Oktoberfest Invitational held at St. Bernard Prep School in Cullman, Alabama. The Varsity Girls placed 5th out of 10 teams and the Varsity Boys placed 5th out of 16 teams in the class 4A- 6A Division. The top JPII finishers were Katie Sisk, who placed 21st with a 5k time of 22 minutes 15 seconds and Stephen Leahy, who placed 28th with a 5k time of 18 minutes 54 seconds. On Tuesday October 11, 2011 the Pope John Paul II cross country teams competed at the Metro Championships held at John Hunt Running Park in Huntsville, Alabama. The Varsity Girls placed 4th out of 9 teams with Lydia Sweeney being our top finisher, placing 15th with a 3 mile time of 22 minutes 32 seconds. The Varsity Boys placed 5th out of 9 teams, with Evan Pardi being the top JPII finisher, placing 9th with a 3 mile time of 17 minutes 42 seconds. Read more
Despite missing 3 of their top 5 runners due to Fall break, the Pope John Paul II Varsity Girls put in a respectable performance, placing 5th out of 18 teams on Saturday, October 08, 2011 at the Dew- It- On- the- Trails cross country meet at Point Mallard Park in Decatur, Alabama. The Varsity Boys did even better, placing 3rd out of 20 teams and taking home the 3rd place team trophy. The top JPII runners were Evan Pardi, who placed 5th out of 208 runners with a 5k time of 17 minutes 56 seconds, and freshman Emily Woods, who ran her life time best 5k time of 22 minutes 03 seconds to place 11th out of 144 runners. On Saturday September 24, 2011 the Pope John Paul II cross country teams hosted the FALCON Invitational held at John Hunt Running Park in Huntsville, Alabama. It takes scores of people to host a cross country meet, and this year was the best ever organizational set up & clean up & deployment of volunteers thanks to the efforts of our parents and volunteer coordinator Anna Riviere. On Tuesday September 20, 2011 the Pope John Paul II cross country teams competed at the Randolph UAH Classic at the University of Alabama at Huntsville. This is a water hazard mud filled course.
